Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009
As the development of a lively waterfront hub progressed, a symbolic event, "Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009," was held in 2009 to widely publicize the revival of Osaka as a water metropolis, and to aim for the creation of a vibrant, beautiful Osaka in which citizens play a central role.
Various programs were developed in various places in the city, mainly in Nakanoshima Park and the Water Corridor, which are highly water-friendly, to connect people with the river and rediscover the joy of the waterside. These programs, such as experiential art programs and workshops, projects to fill the venue with lights, cruises on art boats and illuminated bridges, morning markets and river markets at the wharf, the Water City Art Corridor that toured modern architecture, rivers, bridges, and city walks that incorporated boats and the waterside, were implemented from the planning stage to the implementation stage by citizens, local communities, NPOs, companies, and artists pooling their wisdom and strength, in collaboration with the government. In addition, in conjunction with Suido Osaka 2009, buildings that had their backs to the river were renovated, and a riverside terrace was created as a social experiment in the Kitahama district, encouraging citizen participation and showing a growing momentum for urban development.
In this way, Suido Osaka 2009 not only widely conveyed the appeal of "Aqua Metropolis Osaka," but also demonstrated that creating a lively atmosphere by utilizing rivers and waterfronts can generate new connections among stakeholders and become a driving force for urban regeneration.
