Project Example 3 Nakanoshima Garden Bridge
Utilizing the space above the bridge to host cafes and events
Illuminated Nakanoshima Garden Bridge
In June 2012, the Osaka Prefecture City Urban Attractiveness Strategy Council included the use of bridge space to create a new symbolic space, aiming to "realize Osaka as a capital of water and light" by taking advantage of the characteristics of "Aquapolis Osaka" with a water corridor in the city center. In addition to considering new ways to utilize the public space on the bridge, a social experiment of an open cafe was carried out on Nakanoshima Garden Bridge in October of the same year, with the aim of creating a system for private-sector-led business implementation and creating a constantly lively and attractive waterfront space. In implementing the open cafe, the local government worked together with local groups and private companies around Nakanoshima Garden Bridge to brainstorm ideas for lighting up the area and events, creating a lively atmosphere day and night throughout the region.
