Project Example 12 Nakanoshima Gate Area

Many ships from Osaka Bay visited the Nakanoshima Gate area on their way to the city center. The photo shows a temporary mooring facility.
In October 2012, a social experiment was carried out at the west end of Nakanoshima, a junction between the sea and the river, focusing on an open-air cafe, lighting displays, and the operation of a mooring facility for small boats. This area is surrounded by the Osaka Municipal Central Wholesale Market, the warehouses of Kawaguchi, a former settlement, and the newly opened Osaka Prefectural Enokojima Cultural and Art Creation Center, and has the potential to allow people to experience Osaka's history and culture. In August 10, the Osaka City Charm Creation Strategy (draft), compiled as a common strategy for Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City, positioned this area as one of the new symbolic spaces to be created toward the realization of Osaka as the capital of water and light. In this social experiment, unprecedented attempts were made in the river area, such as the establishment and operation of an open-air cafe and a mooring facility for small boats. In the future, the area will be examined for its potential as a symbolic space and a system for connecting its bases by boat, and will challenge itself to create a new waterfront space for Osaka.
