Project Example 10: Dotonbori River Area
Tombori River Walk
Dotonbori River, which flows through the middle of Osaka's Minami district, was completed in 1615. Dotonbori River is a representative river in Osaka and a precious waterfront space remaining in the city center. However, due to the raising of the banks for flood control measures and the pollution of the water, Dotonbori River has become isolated from the city. In the Dotonbori River Waterfront Development Project, in order to create the "Tonbori River Walk" promenade along the Dotonbori River, discussions were held with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to allow private use for open cafes and events, and some restrictions on the use of the riverbed were relaxed as a social experiment area. Dotonbori River was one of the first areas to be allowed for private use in the revitalization of Osaka as a water city, and is currently used for cafe terraces and events. Currently, the entire region is working to create a vibrant city by making use of the history and traditions that have flourished along with the Hori River in the city development.

Minatomachi/Minamihorie area
Minatomachi River Place is located in the waterfront zone of the "R'nessa Namba" redevelopment project on the former freight yard of the former JNR Minatomachi Station, and opened in 2002. It consists of an outdoor space with a water-friendly view of the Dotonbori River, a live music venue, and the FM Osaka headquarters and studio. On the northern opposite bank, Sumitomo Warehouse Co., Ltd. developed a commercial facility that takes advantage of the waterfront location, and the Tombori River Walk promenade was built along the river, reborn as a water-friendly area. At the same time, the suspension bridge-style pedestrian bridge "Ukiniwabashi" was built over the Dotonbori River as part of the Dotonbori River Waterfront Development Project, strengthening the north-south traffic line with the Horie area, where high-end shops and houses are concentrated, and enhancing the hub of the Minatomachi area. Many young people are seen relaxing by the water on both banks of this area, doing street dance and taking walks.

On the left is the south bank of the Dotonbori River. There are continuous vertical embankments on both sides, and there is no space to get close to the water.

Prior to the opening of Minatomachi River Place (2002), waterfront spaces such as the Tonbori River Walk and the boat pier were opened to the public.

With Ukiniwa Bridge being built over the Dotonbori River, accessibility between Minamihorie and Minatomachi has increased.
